Can dry eye affect your cataract surgery result? It can — because an unstable tear film can sometimes make the measurements used to plan cataract surgery less repeatable. This can affect measurements of the cornea, astigmatism and, in some cases, the calculations used to choose the lens implanted during surgery. In this video, I explain why the tear film matters, why symptoms don't always tell us how significant dry eye is, what I look for when cataract measurements don't agree, and why measurement stability can become particularly important when planning toric, EDOF or multifocal lenses. Importantly, this does not mean everyone with dry eye needs weeks of treatment or that dry eye will automatically cause a poor cataract surgery result. The more useful question is: Is the surface of the eye stable enough for the precision of the decision we're trying to make?
