What do King Crimson and Phish have in common? One of my favorite things in music: polymeter. We spend a lot of time talking about King Crimson on Make Weird Music, but there’s plenty of fascinating music to explore beyond the usual prog examples. Phish’s “Taste,” from their 1996 album “Billy Breathes,” is one of my favorites. I love this song! Using Logic Pro’s stem splitting, I pull apart the guitar, piano, bass, and drums to hear how their overlapping rhythmic patterns fit together. We also listen to the climbing chromatic bass line and some guitar parts that make me wonder how Trey Anastasio manages to sing at the same time. Try following a different instrument each time. There’s so much going on inside this beautiful song. What other songs should I pull apart like this? ----- Join Club Weird for exclusive access to members-only content:    / @makeweirdmusic   Make Weird Music exists to encourage musicians and music enthusiasts to expand their creative horizons through interviews, educational content, and sharing of artistic music.
