http://www.unctv.org Long leaf pines were once a dominant tree in North Carolina, even helping North Carolinians allegedly earn the nickname "Tarheels" for the sap that produced pitch, tar and turpentine. The NC Forest Service is slowly replenishing the depleted acreage of long leaf pines by researching genetics and cultivating seeds that yield millions of seedlings a year.
