Caslick’s procedure (Caslick’s operation) is an important equine reproductive surgery used to improve the vulvar seal and protect the mare’s reproductive tract from contamination. In this video, we review the purpose, basic technique, and clinical indications of a Caslick’s procedure for the BCSE, NAVLE, ECFVG, and equine clinical practice. 🐴 In this video: What is a Caslick’s procedure? Why poor vulvar conformation predisposes mares to reproductive problems Pneumovagina — aspiration of air into the vagina How fecal and environmental contamination can contribute to vaginitis and endometritis How a narrow strip of vulvar mucosa is removed before the edges are sutured together Why the dorsal portion of the vulva is closed Why the ventral portion must remain open to permit normal urination How the procedure helps protect the reproductive tract and improve fertility Why a Caslick’s must be appropriately opened before foaling 📚 HIGH-YIELD EXAM PEARL: Mare + poor vulvar conformation + pneumovagina/reproductive contamination → think CASLICK’S PROCEDURE. 🧠 Easy association: Caslick’s = CLOSE the dorsal vulva → keep contamination OUT. The goal is to improve the vulvar barrier and reduce ascending contamination of the reproductive tract. 🎓 International Vet Academic Your Path to Veterinary Practice in the U.S. & Canada.
