“A small favour… just take a vehicle from Oman to Saudi Arabia, hand it over and return home.” For a 41-year-old Malayali from Mahe, that journey reportedly ended not at the airport, but in a Saudi Arabian prison. According to reports, 43 kilograms of methamphetamine were allegedly discovered concealed inside a modified fuel tank of the vehicle he was driving from Oman to Saudi Arabia. Abutti Vellili was arrested in 2023, and his sentence was subsequently changed to the death penalty. Saudi authorities reportedly announced that the execution was carried out in Dammam on September 27, 2026. Abutti reportedly maintained that he had no knowledge of the drugs and had only agreed to transport a vehicle on behalf of another person. However, the court did not accept his defence. His family had reportedly been waiting for him at the airport when they learned that he had never boarded the flight. Later, enquiries reportedly led to his identification at Al-Ahsa prison. The case raises an important warning for Indians living and working in the Gulf: Should you ever transport someone else’s vehicle, luggage, parcel or belongings without personally verifying what they contain?
