Located in the county of Shropshire, and around 12 miles south of Shrewsbury, is the town of Church Stretton. Geographically, Church Stretton is situated within the Shropshire Hills National Landscape, and around 10 miles east of the England-Wales border. Its name is derived from Old English for 'settlement on the Roman road'. In 1337 it was granted a market charter by Edward III, by which point the 'church' component of the name had been added, helping to distinguish it from the neighbouring settlements of All Stretton and Little Stretton. At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of St Lawrence. This dates from the 12th century with additions up to the 15th century and some restoration from the 19th and 20th centuries. The church is Grade I listed. In 1593 a great fire broke out in Church Stretton, destroying much of the town. Various half-timbered buildings along the high street date from the rebuilding period in its aftermath. In 1852 the railway arrived in Church Stretton courtesy of the Shrewsbury and Hereford Railway. Today, the station forms part of the Welsh Marches Line which runs between Crewe and Newport. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
