This was our first time hiking to the summit of Mount Washington, and we decided to take the traditional route through Tuckerman Ravine, returning via the Lion Head Trail.
We couldn’t have asked for a better day in August—warm temperatures, low winds, and good visibility. The route did not disappoint, and we would highly recommend it for anyone planning their first hike to the summit.
We watched quite a few YouTube videos before the hike, but honestly, they failed to prepare us for the sheer scale of Tuckerman Ravine and the surrounding mountains. This is truly an epic climb with spectacular views!
That said, Mount Washington is not a mountain you want to underestimate, especially in poor weather. The climb is slow and technical, with plenty of exposure, and you’re not getting off this mountain quickly if conditions turn bad.
Some of the clips in this video may not look particularly steep, but I can assure you—they are much steeper than they appear on camera.
If you’re planning this hike, make sure you have a good weather window, your fitness is up to the challenge, and you’re properly prepared for the conditions. Take advantage of the detailed summit weather reports available at mountwashington.org.
And remember: the objective isn’t just to reach the summit—it’s to make it safely back to the car!
