I was running the Precious Memories set onto DVD from VHS for Nick Powell when I discovered that Pap and Ray came back for another set after Nick's family did their set. This second set isn't quite as good as the first one, in my opinion, but it's not bad. :-) If anyone would like to see all of the Precious Memories set, I may provide that footage to Jamie Shook and/or Nick Powell, and they might choose to share it on their YouTube channels. If they upload it to YouTube, I'll post an announcement from the Wilson Brothers channel and from the BlindPig channel. Wes Hooper (the young man who appears with Wayde Powell, II and Nick Powell) is Jamie Shook's cousin.
I was happy to see that this second set included "The Little White Church." That song was one of the most popular songs the Wilson Brothers performed. They recorded it in the early 80's. It has been recorded by many bluegrass artists, like Jim and Jesse, Paul Williams, and Doyle Lawson. It has gained some new popularity of late due to Billy Strings performing it. A small piece of evidence to show how much audiences liked hearing the Wilson Brothers sing "The Little White Church" can be heard during Uncle Ray's guitar break: the audience spontaneously clapped, even though they had already heard about two hours worth of music at that point. I was surprised to see that Pap and Ray didn't choose to end their second set with it and instead chose to close with "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine." That decision may have been based on not wanting to switch back from mandolin to guitar (for Uncle Ray).
In between those two songs, Pap and Ray sang Ira Louvin's "Do You Live What You Preach?" They recorded that song on the "I Believe in God" album for Cloudland Music about a year before this performance at the music barn. I always enjoyed hearing them sing that song.
In this second set, Pap and Ray showed the influence of The Blue Sky Boys by performing "Somewhere Beyond the Blue." They sang that song at many funerals down through the years, and sometimes, I now do. That song also appeared on the "I Believe in God" album. Also early in the second set, we hear "The Friendly Beasts." Pap and Ray mostly sang this song around Christmas time, so I'm sure they included it because this live performance took place in November. It made me smile to see Pap give hand signals to Uncle Ray each time he wanted them to do the humming part. :-) Also of note, this second set included "This Little Light of Mine," which Pap and Ray sang with a similar arrangement to the Louvin Brothers' arrangement. That song was also usually a crowd pleaser, especially if kids were in the audience.
Another thing about this video that made me smile was seeing all of us smile! Even I showed a smile when I crossed the stage headed to my microphone at the start of the set. I was a bit on the sullen side in those days, so that smile showed that I was very much enjoying this performance at the Music Barn.
I hope you enjoyed watching this live performance. Lord willing, I will share more videos like this on the Wilson Brothers channel, and I'll eventually share audio from several of their Sunday radio broadcasts. Thanks for watching!
