Bishop Dag Heward-Mills teaches that disregarding advice is a serious sign of dishonor, reading from Deuteronomy 5:16, 'Honor thy father and thy mother as the Lord thy God commanded thee, that thy days may be prolonged and that it may go well with thee.' He explains that the most powerful quotation in a believer's life should be 'my father said' or 'my mother said,' because obeying instruction even when you disagree is the truest form of honor a son or daughter can give. He illustrates this with vivid stories: his own father warning him never to drive someone else's car, a lesson proven right when relatives crashed a borrowed car at a homecoming and flew back to London leaving the owner stranded. He recounts how Pastor Prince Gat advised him to keep preaching in his own church using the proverb 'the dogs know the one who feeds them.' He also recalls preaching so passionately against debt that he wept at the pulpit, only for the entire congregation to do the exact opposite the moment he left. He warns that offerings presented alongside disobedience are offerings wrapped in disrespect, quoting 1 Samuel 2:30, 'Them that honour me I will honour.'
