In the summer of 2012, a sign in the window of a Micro Center in Santa Clara, California, still promised "the world's fastest PC." The chip it was bragging about was five years old, and the store behind it had just closed for good. Its landlord wouldn't renew the lease, so Micro Center walked out of Silicon Valley and left it to Fry's Electronics.
Then Fry's went dark. All of it, in one night in 2021. And in May 2025, Micro Center came back to Santa Clara, with hundreds of people lined up around the block to get in.
This is the story of how a computer store that started in one small room outside Columbus, Ohio, founded in 1980 by two former Radio Shack employees with $35,000, outlasted Fry's, CompUSA, RadioShack and Circuit City. It's about the decision that should have sunk it: refusing to fight Amazon online, and asking customers to drive in instead. And it's about the people behind the counter who kept those customers coming back.
We'll walk through the rise, the stores that vanished around it, the years it spent away from Silicon Valley, and the comeback nobody was betting on in 2012.
Did you ever shop at a Micro Center, a Fry's or a CompUSA? Tell us what city, what year, and what you walked out with. We read every comment.
