WEEKEND WOGAN 10th ANNIVERSARY SERIES - Show 20/35
11.04am, live on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, 1 August 2010… the iconic Prince song… 'Kiss'.
Tom Jones’ 1988 hit version, produced by Art Of Noise, was a phenomenal and critical success. However, years before that (and before the infamous ‘Jonathan Ross Talk Show’ performance which spawned it and is credited as the moment Tom Jones’ career was resurrected) I had seen Tom perform ‘Kiss’ on his own TV special and the version he performed on THAT show was nothing like the eventual Art Of Noise hit version. I actually always preferred that earlier TV version with an amazing horn arrangement and a more Rhythm & Blues feel to it.
The version we performed here on ‘Weekend Wogan’ was mainly based on that earlier version, with a hint of the Art Of Noise version and a nod also to Prince himself! 😁
Also… MY BAND!!! How ridiculously KILLER do they sound on this?
Bryan Hargreaves - Drums
Neil Fairclough - Bass
Darren Loveday - Guitar
Paul Newton - Trumpet
Adrian Fry - Trombone
Peter Effamy - Sax
Adrian Revell - Sax
Kirstie Roberts - Background Vocals
Sue Acteson - Background Vocals
Niamh McNally - Background Vocals
Every single one of these musicians and singers are among the cream of the crop… as you can hear week after week with these live ‘Weekend Wogan’ posts! And as a stroke of luck, the brilliant Jim Watson was there this week playing piano for Marti Pellow and so I took the opportunity of inviting him to jam along with us on Hammond organ.
AND… It’s all well and good having a stunning band but if you don’t have an equally awesome sound engineer to make sure the world hears the song and the arrangement as it was intended, you’re nothing. We were blessed with having the magnificent Jerry Smith as our broadcast engineer for 80% of the shows that year… and THIS was one of them. I thanked my lucky stars every time I saw the weekly call-sheet and saw Jerry’s name on there as our sound guy for the show. Jerry simply had the magic touch when it came to making my band sound huge and amazing to the millions listening and watching. ❤️
