iPhone Duo Review: Double-Edged Sword

To fully understand the first folding iPhone, we need to revisit another first from 16 years ago. No, not the 2007 iPhone keynote: I’m talking about the iPad debut from January 2010. It was buzzy and exciting in its own way, but even then, people seemed to grasp that it wasn’t the sea change the iPhone had represented. Partially that’s because at launch it was essentially what its critics called it – an oversized iPod Touch. Its main advantage was that it was … big. But people vastly underestimated how big a difference that could make. All these years later, the iPhone Duo doubles down on the same bet by offering a larger display – only when you need it. That simple promise has been enough to sell foldables to a small audience for the better part of a decade, but always constrained by the critical caveat that if you want your phone to fold, you need to switch to Android.
