She felt her Olympic team stop playing to win. That feeling has a name, and it's fear. Shawnee Harle rode the bench at the number one program in the country. Then she got cut — and the coach who cut her is the one who pushed her into coaching. Twenty years as a university head coach and two Olympic Games with Canada followed. But the moment that turned her into a mental toughness coach was a quarterfinal in Rio, against a team they had already beaten twice in the previous eighteen months. She describes the exact instant the energy shifted — from playing to win to playing not to lose — and her point is that this isn't a tactical problem. It's fear, and everyone in the building can feel it. This one gets practical fast. Her toolkit is three words: chill, change, choose. She explains the voice of fear that steals the microphone and how to tell it to shut up. Why we only fear the things we believe we can't handle, and the second step almost nobody takes after facing a fear. The difference between good anger and bad anger, and which one makes you play better. If you're a parent, go to 43:16. She lays out what a 14-year-old told her, what the parents told her, and why measuring an athlete by scoreboard and starting lineup builds fear into them on purpose. Most programs train the body and hope the mind catches up. Shawnee has the toolkit.
