Roger Ebert, the famous film critic, was once quoted as saying: “It’s not what a movie is about, it’s how it is about it.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, the rule applies to music no less than it does to the art of motion pictures. So, yeah, it’s not what a song is about but rather how it’s about what it’s about. What M M M is about probably has to do with friends, regrets and self-appraisal. The rest is impossible to make out. But just how it’s about it is what really makes Still House Plants stand out as a band. Their new record If I Don’t Make It, I Love You is in the very vanguard of contemporary rock music and whatever praise they have been lavished with has been well-deserved. Nerds will save the world.
