What becomes possible when we stop trying to solve complex challenges within our own organisations and sectors and start bringing different people, perspectives, skills, and experiences together?
In this 16th fortnightly session of the Strength-Based Leadership Community, Om Dhungel and Sara Shrestha are joined by Tahlia Torcasio to explore From Silos to Synergy: Collaborating Across Sectors.
The conversation begins with an important reality: many of today's community challenges are too complex for any one organisation, profession, or sector to solve alone. Collaboration allows us to combine knowledge, relationships, lived experience, and expertise to create stronger, more sustainable solutions.
Drawing on her experience studying Mechanical and Humanitarian Engineering at RMIT, Tahlia shares her involvement with the HERCULES Challenge, an initiative that brings university students, community organisations, and local communities together to co-design practical solutions.
A key message throughout the session is that solutions should not simply be designed for communities, but with communities.
The discussion explores the importance of bringing together content experts, who contribute technical knowledge and professional expertise, with context experts, who bring lived experience, local knowledge, and a deep understanding of community realities. When these perspectives come together, solutions become more practical, trusted, and meaningful.
The conversation also examines why collaboration can be difficult. Often the barrier is not a lack of willingness, but a lack of opportunities and spaces where people from different sectors can connect. Trust, relationships, curiosity, and a shared purpose become the foundations for successful collaboration.
Participants are encouraged to step beyond their usual professional circles by attending events, joining networks, reaching out through LinkedIn, or exploring partnerships with people from different backgrounds. Meaningful collaboration often begins with a single conversation.
Ultimately, moving from silos to synergy requires more than bringing organisations into the same room. It requires creating genuine partnerships that value different forms of knowledge and focus on building solutions together.
Key Takeaways
• Complex challenges require cross-sector collaboration.
• Develop solutions with communities, not simply for them.
• Content experts and context experts both play essential roles.
• Trust, relationships, and shared purpose strengthen collaboration.
• Build on existing community strengths before creating something new.
• Small actions and new connections can lead to meaningful partnerships.
• Move beyond asking, "What can we do?" to "What could we achieve together?"
