Two bruises. On the back of an eighteen-year-old's skull. Found by the state's own medical examiner. And never photographed.
Nolan Xavier Wells cooked salmon for his family on July third. He hugged his mother, kissed her, and told her he loved her. The next morning he boarded a boat to Horn Island with a group of friends for the Fourth of July. By the following morning, he was dead in the water. His phone was already in his parents' hands before his body was found. His keys were on the boat. He wasn't.
A grand jury met for five days, issued 132 subpoenas, heard from 43 witnesses, reviewed cellphone extractions and GPS data, and cleared everyone. Both autopsies ruled the cause and manner of death as undetermined, not accidental. The state medical examiner found bruising on the back of Nolan's skull, told investigators, and no photographs of the back of his head were ever taken. Dr. Roger Mitchell's independent autopsy confirmed the red discoloration was blood — two contusions documented by the original Mississippi pathologist, with the cause of those injuries and their contribution to Nolan's death remaining unexplained.
His mother says his phone was too clean. No Snapchats from the island. No videos. A private forensic exam recovered nearly 300 Snaps. The full extraction was never turned over to the DA's office. The Congressional Black Caucus asked the DOJ to open a federal review. That request is still unanswered.
If the bruises were documented, why were they never photographed? If they were photographed, why does the family say they weren't? And if a drowning caused them, why did the state's own pathologist call it a diagnosis by exclusion?
Watch until the end. The evidence is still sitting in a locker somewhere. And the family is not done fighting.
