There are moments when we have prayed, worried, tried everything we know to do — and still cannot fix what is happening. Mater, Duc Me ad Filium is an original Latin Marian hymn for those moments, inspired by Mary at the Wedding at Cana and her quiet trust in Jesus. “Mother, take what I cannot fix to Jesus.” At Cana, Mary saw a need that others had not yet noticed. The wine had run out. She did not draw attention to the problem or attempt to solve it herself. She simply brought it to her Son: “They have no wine.” Then Mary turned to the servants and spoke the final words attributed to her in the Gospel of John: “Do whatever He tells you.” — John 2:5 That moment became the heart of this hymn. This is a prayer for the things we cannot repair ourselves — the unanswered prayer, the troubled family, the uncertain future, the burden we have carried too long, or the situation for which we simply cannot see a way forward. The things I understand and the things I cannot put into words. Take my worries, my unanswered questions, my fears, and the burdens I have carried for too long, and lead me with them to Jesus. When I cannot see what He is doing, teach me to trust Him. When His answer is different from what I expected, give me the faith to follow Him. And when I do not know what to do next, remind me of your words at Cana: “Do whatever He tells you.” Mother, lead me to your Son. Pray for me, and keep my heart close to Jesus.
