Half the fandom says Annie Leonhart was a cold professional who felt nothing. The other half says she was a child soldier who just followed orders. This video argues both readings take her choices away, and that the show gives us the evidence ourselves.
Stanley Milgram's own data says obedience collapses when the authority is far away, and Marley is an ocean away. What it can explain is Marco, with Reiner in the room. What it cannot explain is the forest, where she kills four soldiers on the way to Eren and, on the same expedition, spares Armin.
Then there is the face. Attachment research has a name for calm on the outside and a racing body on the inside, and the show leaves a trail of evidence that Annie's flat expression is a strategy, not an absence. And there is the promise her adoptive father asks of her the day she leaves, which cancels the one deal every other Warrior is working for and leaves her with a loyalty to exactly one person.
Is that an excuse? Bernard Williams would call it partiality, the right to put your own first. The video asks what Williams never says: how many strangers is that right allowed to cost? And Hannah Arendt explains why the word we keep reaching for, obedience, was never the alibi we thought it was.
