Follow the falling notes and enjoy a maxixe-flavored masterpiece from the man who bridged classical and popular piano. 🎼 ABOUT ERNESTO NAZARETH Ernesto Nazareth (1863-1934) was a Rio de Janeiro pianist and composer whose roughly two hundred piano pieces form the bridge between nineteenth-century European salon music and genuinely Brazilian popular music. His mother gave him his first lessons; Chopin became his lifelong model, and you can hear it in the elegance of the writing. He labelled his pieces "tango brasileiro", partly to avoid the disreputable word maxixe, and they are in truth the ancestors of choro. "Brejeiro" of 1893 made his name, and "Odeon" of 1909 - titled after the Rio cinema where he played for waiting audiences - is among the best-loved pieces any Brazilian composer has written. He is often called Brazil's Scott Joplin, and the comparison holds up: the same era, the same fusion of dance rhythm and refined craft, the same reward for careful playing. Salon elegance over Brazilian dance rhythm: the left hand outlines a syncopated habanera or tresillo pattern instead of a marching alternating bass, under a graceful, Chopin-inflected right-hand melody. Plenty of chromatic inner voices, minor-to-major turns and rubato.
