THE PAINTING Artist – Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) Title – Starry Night Over the Rhône (La Nuit étoilée) Date – September 1888 Size – 73 × 92 cm Museum – Musée d'Orsay, Paris Scene – The Rhône embankment, Arles, France Arles at night, seen from the bank of the Rhône a few minutes' walk from the Yellow House, where Van Gogh lived. On the left is the old town with its bell towers, in the middle the bridge to Trinquetaille, on the right the far bank. The gas lamps along the embankment burn yellow and drop long gold streaks into the water. Above them are the seven stars of the Great Bear. In the foreground two boats are moored at a sandbar and a couple walks arm in arm. Van Gogh had wanted to paint the night since he arrived in Provence in February 1888. At the end of September he wrote to his brother Theo: "the starry sky at last, actually painted at night, under a gas-lamp. The sky is green-blue, the water is royal blue, the areas of land are mauve." He refused the black night of older painting: every dark area here is built from blue, and the warm colour comes almost entirely from the gaslight and its reflections, the stars carry only a pale pink. The sky is not the one in front of him. He was looking south-west, and the Great Bear hangs in the north-north-west, behind him. He moved the constellation into the sky above the town, so the canvas holds two views at once. In the same letter he wrote that he felt "a tremendous need for, shall I say the word — for religion — so I go outside at night to paint the stars." A few weeks later Gauguin arrived in Arles; by Christmas the two had quarrelled and Van Gogh had cut off his ear. Nine months after this canvas, in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, he painted The Starry Night now in New York. This is the quieter of the two. The picture was first shown in Paris in September 1889, beside Irises, at the Salon des Indépendants. A critic called it an eccentricity and took the lovers for "strangely sinister beings". It passed from Theo's widow to Dutch and French collectors, was given to the French state in 1975, and has hung in the Musée d'Orsay since 1995.
