J'onn J'onzz was murdered during Final Crisis, and the Justice League didn't even notice until it was too late to save him. The villains had to use three hundred specialized chemical darts just to keep him still long enough for Libra to deliver the killing blow with a borrowed knife. Before Mars fell to a brother's engineered plague of fire, J'onn was a trained civil peace officer and a philosopher's son, carrying an entire civilization's telepathic memories into exile on Earth. To survive the loneliness, he spent decades adopting human faces, working as a Kansas farmhand and hiding inside a series of borrowed identities. When the Secret Society finally cornered him in a Denver planetarium, he did not call for help. Instead, he reached into his murderers' minds and projected the Justice League into the room so he wouldn't die alone. Subscribe for more comic history argued directly from the panel.
