In this episode, we tackle the wild backcountry stretching between Padum and the legendary border divide at Shinku La Pass, bringing you along for every switchback, river crossing, and high-altitude challenge. ​🏔️ THE EXPEDITION STORY ​Starting early from the historic heart of Padum, our route takes us deep into the high gorges and sweeping valleys of Zanskar along the newly opening axis toward Himachal Pradesh. As the tarmac fades into loose gravel and rock trails, we navigate riverbed bypasses and remote mountain hamlets where time moves at its own pace. ​The defining highlight of this stretch is our approach to Gonbo Rangjon—the standalone sacred monolith revered by locals as a divine protector. Rising sharply out of the flat valley floor, this colossal stone mass dwarfs everything around it. Standing beneath its towering shadow is a moment of pure silence and perspective that makes every kilometer of harsh trail worthwhile. We launch the drone right along the base of the rock to capture scale and perspectives that cameras on the ground simply cannot reveal. ​Leaving Gonbo Rangjon behind, the road turns sharply upward. The climb toward Shinku La Pass (16,580 ft / 5,053 m) is a grueling test of human endurance, low-oxygen engine performance, and steady tire placement over jagged scree.
