Extraordinary teachers can't fix a broken system. Only stronger systems can. Score your learning system in 2 minutes to find out how to strengthen it: https://spectrumversity.com/ We ask teachers to differentiate. To teach explicitly. To use data to improve every student's learning. Then we expect them to reinvent the curriculum on their own, week after week, for every learner in the room, including the student who is years ahead and the one who is years behind. When it doesn't work, we might send them to another PD. But most of the time they don't need to be told to teach better. They need the steps that someone else has already built. So how do we strengthen an education system, whether it's a school, a tutoring centre, an edtech product, a community program or a training system? Over the past 25 years observing where learning breaks down, I turned to research this past year to test what I'd seen. I worked with two international research teams, at Monash University and the University of Warwick, to build the Pentaverse Scale, a 10-question measure used to score over 200 education systems. I'm also working with the CSIRO on knowledge graphs, to understand where learning breaks down and guide students from there. In this keynote from the National Education Summit, I show what that research points to and how it can change the way we support teachers and learners. Then I invite you to score a learning system of your own. It could be your school, a school you're considering for your child, a tuition centre, an edtech product, a community program or a training system. It takes about 2 minutes to find the gaps and see whether it's the right fit. Score your learning system here: https://spectrumversity.com/ Once you know where the gaps are, you can start strengthening it by building the support that helps every teacher reach every learner.
