🎉 Celebrating Rongali Bihu on the World’s Largest River Island 🌾
Curious about the life on the Biggest River Island on Earth? Check out here: • The biggest river island on Earth...as you...
On an island shaped by the Brahmaputra, a new year begins with music, colour, and a ritual of care for the animals that share everyday life. This is Majuli, Assam, where I experienced Rongali Bihu not as a spectacle, but from within the warmth of a local home and community. Would you travel this far to welcome spring on the river?
In this video, I take you to Majuli—the world’s largest river island—for Rongali Bihu, also known as Bohag Bihu. Celebrated in April, it marks the Assamese New Year and the arrival of spring. From the first day’s Goru Bihu traditions to joyful dance, music, visits, and shared meals, this journey is a slow-travel look at one of Assam’s most loved celebrations.
Majuli is much more than a dramatic river landscape. The island is a cultural heartland of Assam, known for its Satras—Vaishnavite monastic institutions that have helped preserve Sattriya dance, music, theatre, mask-making, and other artistic traditions. It is also home to Mising, Deori, and Assamese communities whose ways of life, craftsmanship, and hospitality make the island so distinctive.
Over three days, I join my host family for the rhythms of Bihu: washing and caring for cows on Goru Bihu, visiting Satras, watching traditional dances, and meeting an astrologer. You will also see the quieter side of life in Majuli—from river-island roads to the homestay that welcomed me in Kamalabari. These small, personal moments are what made the trip unforgettable.
If you are planning an Assam itinerary, Majuli is a meaningful destination for cultural travel, solo travel, and anyone interested in the Brahmaputra Valley beyond the usual tourist trail. Its river landscapes, spiritual heritage, and everyday community life reward travellers who take the time to stay, listen, and learn.
A heartfelt thank you to my wonderful host family at Rupali Tat Ghar and Homestay for making me feel at home.
