It is also far more than this: it is an exploration of friendship and of the essence of what it means to be human in the world we live in and the mysterious relationships between things, explored in a moving and profound story. *Cambridgeshire is the county in eastern England in which Philippa Pearce grew up and later returned to. It is where “Tom’s Midnight Garden” is set. *“Castleford” is a fictionalised version of Cambridge. *Ely is a city near Cambridge with a cathedral famous for its octagonal tower. The cathedral is sometimes referred to as “The Ship of the Fens” as it stands out so significantly above the surrounding flat, marshy landscape. *The Fens are very fertile, low-lying marshland covering about 1,500 square miles across parts of eastern England including parts of Cambridgeshire.
