Why does a universe filled with planets appear completely silent?
The Fermi Paradox begins with a simple contradiction: if intelligent life can arise elsewhere in the universe, and civilizations have had billions of years to develop, why have we found no confirmed evidence of anyone else?
This documentary follows that question from Enrico Fermi’s famous “Where is everybody?” to the modern search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
We examine BLC1 — the intriguing radio signal detected while observing Proxima Centauri — before exploring some of the major attempts to explain the cosmic silence: the Great Filter, rare technological civilizations, interstellar expansion, the Zoo hypothesis, the Dark Forest idea, and the possibility that the evidence simply does not look the way we expect.
But an explanation is only scientifically useful if we can ask what evidence it predicts.
History gives us reasons to be careful. Percival Lowell once mapped apparent canals on Mars and interpreted them as evidence of an intelligent civilization. Better observations told a different story.
So rather than asking only what might be out there, this film asks a harder question:
*If another civilization existed, what should we actually expect to find — and what would convince us that we had found it?*
