Cold Day Charcoal Harvesting & Outdoor Family Cooking in Our African Village 🌿🔥

Join us this cool afternoon in our African village as Mama Viola and the family prepare a comforting traditional meal while Papa Viola and Muwanga harvest and bag fresh charcoal from our earth kiln. 🌿🔥 Our morning begins out in the lush garden. Mama Viola gathers fresh banana leaves using a traditional curved harvester blade, surrounded by our palm, avocado, and pawpaw trees, alongside ripening coffee cherries. Meanwhile, at the charcoal kiln, Papa Viola and Muwanga work through the heat—unearthing the fresh charcoal, spreading soil to cool the embers, and carefully filling sacks with cooled, rich black charcoal ready for use. 🪵🔥 Back at the homestead, cooking begins against the chilly breeze. Mama Viola and Venna peel fresh green bananas (matooke), feeding the peels to our goats while our dog Max relaxes nearby. 🐐🐕 On the outdoor stove, Mama Viola prepares a flavorful pot of traditional beef tripe, washing it thoroughly, dicing it, and simmering it with fresh spices alongside a pot of warm rice. Down the hill, Maria and Muggie make the daily trek to the village well to bring home fresh water. 💧 Once the steaming matooke is wrapped and mashed soft, Papa Viola and Muwanga return from the kiln.
