On Sunday evening, 25 October 2026, United Airlines Flight 1854 was coming down towards Houston, Texas, at the end of a flight from Grand Cayman in the Caribbean — a Boeing 737 MAX 9 with, according to United, 83 passengers and 6 crew on board. On descent, the crew reported a problem no pilot wants on final approach: the landing gear would not come down. In this Cockpit Files investigation we reconstruct the reported timeline: the emergency declaration, the low pass over Houston so the gear position could be checked from the ground, the passing aircraft's confirmation that the right main gear was not deployed, two reported go-arounds, and a fuel clock reported at about 4,800 pounds — ten to twelve minutes. Then, in the final holding pattern, the right gear deployed, and the jet landed safely. No injuries are reported. But this story has a central tension we do not paper over. The radio traffic, as reported, describes a right main gear that would not come down. United's own statement says only that the flight "declared an emergency upon landing due to a mechanical indication" — no mention of landing gear, no mention of a gear failure. At the time of the earliest reporting, neither United nor the FAA had confirmed the gear account. So in this video the gear fault stays where the evidence puts it: reported, not confirmed. The numbers do not agree either, and we show you both: United counts 83 passengers plus 6 crew — 89 people in total — while the ATC audio, as reported, says "90 souls on board". Landing time is also reported two ways: about 8:24pm local in FlightAware-based reporting, about 8:12pm in one other outlet. The cause is unknown, no FAA final finding has been published, and no outlet reports why the gear eventually deployed — so we do not guess. ⚠️ DISCLAIMER: This video is a documentary reconstruction made for educational purposes; all claims are sourced from the named outlets below.
