This sea shanty is written as though Brook himself is singing aboard the ship—laughing “Yohohoho,” raising his fiddle, remembering his fallen crew and turning sorrow into a song sailors can sing together. Beneath the comedy is the tragedy that makes Brook special: every laugh carries someone who can no longer laugh beside him. The song also celebrates the Brook we know today—the Soul King, Straw Hat musician and impossible survivor who found another family after fifty years of solitude.
