[Verse 1]
I turned sixty-one on September twenty-six,
Still alone and tired of trying, still waiting for things to lift.
I’ve tried so hard to do right, but when I count what I can show,
There’s an empty chair beside me and a hurt that won’t let go.
I said, “Lord, if You want me, then You’ll have to make it clear,”
While anger filled the silence where I used to bring my fear.
[Chorus]
If I want God, then I’ll have to show Him,
Bring this weary heart and let Him in.
Belief comes first, and then my eyes can open;
I don’t need all the answers to begin.
He hasn’t got a thing to prove,
And I’ve got a step to take.
If I want God, then I’ll have to show Him
With the faith I choose today.
[Spoken Preacher]
I used to think I needed a sign, a sudden flash of certainty. But I realized, like Paul on the road to Damascus, that God won't always show Himself until I truly believe in Him—not the other way around. Faith isn't waiting for the proof to arrive; it's opening your eyes to see what was there all along.
[Congregation]
Amen!
[Verse 2]
I need a little distance from the bitterness inside,
Before it takes my kindness, before it turns to pride.
I’ve been holding on to grudges, keeping count of every wrong,
And asking why He’s silent while I’ve talked the whole night long.
Now I want to learn to listen, though I don’t know where to start;
I can bring Him all my questions without closing up my heart.
[Chorus]
If I want God, then I’ll have to show Him,
Bring this weary heart and let Him in.
Belief comes first, and then my eyes can open;
I don’t need all the answers to begin.
He hasn’t got a thing to prove,
And I’ve got a step to take.
If I want God, then I’ll have to show Him
With the faith I choose today.
[Bridge]
There may still be lonely evenings,
There may still be tears to cry.
But I can choose to turn towards Him
Without first knowing why.
I’ll open up the pages,
I’ll make some room to pray,
And thank you, brother, for your kindness
When I nearly walked away.
[Final Chorus]
If I want God, then I’ll have to show Him,
Bring this weary heart just as I am.
Belief comes first, and then my eyes can open;
I’ll take a step before I understand.
He hasn’t got a thing to prove;
I’m learning how to trust.
If I want God, then I’ll have to show Him—
And belief must come first.
[Outro]
Lord, here I am, still tired and lonely,
But I’m making room for You.
I’ll begin with what I do believe
And bring my questions too.
