What Does It Mean to Be a Woman? | Imbokodo | The Sociology of Womanhood

What does it mean to be a woman in South Africa today? “Wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo” — you strike a woman, you strike a rock. The phrase has come to represent the strength, resilience and resistance of South African women. But what happens when we ask a different question: Does a woman always have to be a rock? In this Women's Month episode, we explore the sociology of womanhood through the legacy of the women of 1956 and the idea of agency. The women who marched to the Union Buildings were not simply victims of the society they lived in. They were political actors. They organised, resisted, made choices and helped reshape South African society. But what does their legacy mean for women today? Can we be educated AND nurturing? Ambitious AND deeply connected to our families? Independent AND desire partnership? Strong AND soft? Feminist AND still embrace aspects of tradition? This video explores womanhood beyond the idea that women must constantly choose between opposing identities. Because liberation should expand women's possibilities and not replace one set of expectations with another. We also explore an important question about agency: if we have the ability to make choices, what responsibility comes with those choices? And if women are shaped by society, how are women also participating in shaping society? Perhaps we don't have to become rocks to be powerful women.
