What Los Angeles Will Look Like in 2035

In 1980, Los Angeles County voters approved a tax and a map. Drawn on that map was a rail line through the Sepulveda Pass. In January 2026 — forty-six years later — the Metro board finally voted on which route it would take. It is scheduled to open between 2033 and 2035. This is what Los Angeles actually looks like in 2035, based on eight projects that are funded, approved, or already under construction. A subway under Wilshire Boulevard that should have opened in 1990. A rail connection to LAX that took forty years to build. A light rail line serving 1.2 million people who currently have almost no transit at all.
