What do you see when you look at a keris? A dagger? A weapon? A work of art?
In Java, the keris has never been only a blade. It has been carried by warriors, presented in royal courts, passed down through families, and woven into literature, ritual and craftsmanship.
In Episode 1 of this series, we step into the forge and ask a simple question: what is a keris? You'll meet the elements that make one, from the blade and its straight or luk (wavy) form to dhapur, pamor, ukiran and warangka. You'll also hear from an empu (master keris maker) about what the keris means to him.
In this episode:
0:00 Opening: fire, metal and pamor
0:50 More than a blade
1:19 The parts of a keris
4:19 Conversation with an empu
Describing a keris as "an Indonesian dagger" is technically correct, but it is like describing a cathedral as a building. Accurate, but incomplete.
Meet the keris where its story is still being made.
