Bhansidhar Ji was born on July 13, 1925, and lived at Leiding 10. His parents had four children: three sons and one daughter. During his youth, the family moved from Leiding 10 to Flora. From the age of 13, he began singing and, together with some friends, formed his own music group, which was mainly a Baithak Gana ensemble. His voice is preserved on many of his LPs and CDs, and he continued singing—primarily bhajans—well into his later years. In 1940, Bhansidhar Ji wrote his first play (naatak), followed by several others that were performed for large audiences. In November 1966, the Mahabharat cultural association “Half Flora” (of which he was chairman), in collaboration with the study group “Barhanti” (led by Ir. Sew S. Radhakisun), staged the Mahabharat in five parts. Bhansidhar Ji played the role of Arjuna. As chairman, he advocated for women to participate in the production, whereas previously men had always played female roles. As Pandit Ji remarked, “No matter how hard the men tried to act as women, their voices always gave them away.” He represented Suriname on multiple cultural occasions and was honored in the 1970s by President Johan Ferrier. His final acting performances can be seen in “Land van Rama.” From the age of 60, Ramchander Ji also became a certified pandit (Hindu priest). His teachers were Baboe Sahadewsingh and Pandit Bhagwandat. He served as chairman of the priests’ council of the Surya Mandir and conducted yagnas and puja services in Suriname and Guyana. In May 2005, he departed from the temporal world and entered eternity. Artist: Ramchander Bhansidhar Album: Music From the West Label: Paloeloe Production Synthesizer and Mandolien: M.S.
