The community of Boothroyd has a long history of practicing land and fuel management on their territory. In recent years, Boothroyd has been working with specialists from the BC Wildfire Service and First Nations’ Emergency Services Society (FNESS) to reintroduce fire as a tool for land stewardship. This 50-hectare cultural burning project was completed to protect the community and create a healthier forest, while helping to bring berries and medicinal plants back into the area. The project also provided a training opportunity, with up to 10 members of the Boothroyd community participating, learning how to mix fuels and carry torches. This is the second half of a two-part case study.
