BALLYDEHOB: Saithe na Samhna 🎃 | The Lights of Halloween

EN//Ballydehob, a small village in West Cork, Ireland, celebrates Halloween with roots that go much further back than we might imagine. Here, *Saithe na Samhna – The Lights of Halloween* draws inspiration from the ancient traditions of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. Many customs we now associate with Halloween have links to these Irish traditions: costumes, games, fortune-telling, pranks and, most famously, traditional carved turnip lanterns, long before pumpkins became the symbol we know today. And in Ballydehob, a very particular character makes an appearance: **Turnip Jack**, the star of the celebration and the one responsible for… turning on the lights! 🥬 This video has no narration. It captures different moments from the celebration, with information about its traditions, Halloween music and moments when the music fades away to reveal the authentic chants and sounds of the event. An opportunity to experience a unique celebration and discover another side of Irish culture. --- 📺 *Las movidas de Jore | Jore's Stuff* Real places, real people and experiences worth sharing.
