You’ve been needing a nice rainstorm but something isn’t right… When you check the forecast on your phone, it says it’s clear without a chance of rain. You text your neighbor, politely mentioning the storm, but they message you back like you’re crazy. “I just checked and it isn’t storming. Are you okay?” You return your attention to the windows and yep—it is definitely raining. Actually, it’s pouring. It’s nearly a white-out there’s so much rain. You can barely even see your neighbor’s house let alone the road. And it’s nice, so you don’t think anymore of it. You begin to relax and do your thing around the house. Maybe you put on a show or movie, or you start playing a video game. Maybe you begin to write, or you continue reading your book, or you start cooking in the kitchen. Whatever the case, the rain is extremely calming. It’s surprisingly loud for not having any windows open, but it’s relaxing and you always like to appreciate these storms when they come. It’s not long into your task when you go back to the window to witness the rain. It’s still so loud and consistent and it’s blinded the view around your home. The weather app still promises no rain. When you try texting your neighbor, the message doesn’t go through. Outside your window, you notice the leaves have begun to wither. Then, all at once your windows peel open. You cannot close them. The damp air breezes into your home. It’s nice. But this isn’t what you wanted. Not really. Yes, you asked for a rainstorm, but this is getting out of control. The windowsills are wet now. You try calling your neighbor to ask about the rainstorm but the call drops. The rain is steady and the temperature inside your home is dropping. The calming noise is beginning to get to you, and when you put headphones on, you can still hear the rain just as clearly. It doesn’t make sense. Everywhere you go in your home, the storm is just as loud. You lock yourself in the windowless bathroom and cover your ears but the storm is still there. You realize then that you can’t even hear yourself think. It’s just the sound of rain. The storm is inside of you. It has infiltrated every aspect of your being. You grip the bathroom sink and try to speak to your reflection, but the only sound that rolls off your tongue is the heavy rainstorm roaring outside.
