It’s Hunter here, and today Tyler and I are reacting to another incredibly heavy song from Gojira: “The Art of Dying,” performed live at Vieilles Charrues Festival in 2010! From the speed and crushing instrumentation to the harsh vocals and constant musical changes, this performance has it all. Coming from somebody who occasionally dabbles in death metal, this song seriously impressed me. This isn’t the style of metal that Tyler and I listen to every day, but we both have a tremendous amount of respect for how Gojira creates music within this heavier genre. One thing that can make some extreme metal feel repetitive to me is when an entire song stays locked into one sound—but Gojira does the complete opposite. They know exactly how to change the pace, shift the energy, and make every section sound distinctive while still feeling like part of one complete song. Even though their music is on the harsher side of heavy metal, what they have created here is absolutely brilliant!
