How far can a Geely EX5 EM-i Super Hybrid go on just a few liters of fuel? Can the EX5 EM-i Super Hybrid go from Makati to Fort Ilocandia in Laoag, Ilocos Norte and back – a total distance of over 1,000 kilometers – on one full tank + one full charge. This was the Geely EX EM-2 3L Challenge to the members of the motoring media and influencers who recently joined the economy drive to Ilocos Norte for 3 days. 3L Challenge is for the EX5 to get a fuel economy of 3 liters per 100 Km on real road conditions. Launched last March, the Geely EX5 EM-I Super Hybrid is a compact SUV that pairs electric drive with a gasoline engine, allowing drivers to rely on electrified driving for daily city use while keeping fuel-based flexibility for longer trips. For drivers who can charge regularly and mostly do city routes, a plug-in hybrid can shift a portion of weekly driving from gasoline to electricity. Geely lists the system with hybrid fuel consumption of 2.4 L/100 km (WLTP Fuel Consumption-Weighted, Combined), equivalent up to 41.6km/L, total range exceeding 1,000 km on a full tank and charge, and charging support that can take the battery from 30% to 80% in as little as 20 minutes under stated conditions. During the drive to Laoag, I was assigned to Car No. 5, a gray EX5 EM-i MAX, with Reynold Gan of Reygan Rides and Justin Young of Visor.ph. We were three generations of car drivers, in twenties (Justin), forties (ReyGan), and sixties (that’s me), and we would evaluate the EX5 on different perspectives. As a senior, I was particularly interested on its riding comfort and space, and as a traveler, I was interested on how far the Geely EX5 EM-i Super Hybrid can go The moment I stepped into the rear passenger seats, I was immediately impressed by the EX5 EM-i Super Hybrid by its space. As a six-footer, I was able to sit comfortably and enjoy its large rear space, from legroom to head room to shoulder room. I also noticed how quiet the cabin is. It was so quiet that I was able to do my afternoon nap while Reygan and Justin were driving. The EX5 EM-i Super Hybrid has some very cool features like the 15.4” HD display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice controls, panoramic sky-view with a power-opening sunroof and an electric sunshade, 15W fast wireless charging, and Flyme Sound Premium Audio with 16 Speakers (Tweeters X4 + Midrange x5 + Woofers x4 + Subwoofer x1 + Headrest Speakers x2). It also has a large storage capacity of 2065L with rear seats folded. It has a Voice Assistant – the “Hi Geely” smart voice system – that executes hundreds of commands. The EX5 EM-i Super Hybrid is a Plug-in Hybrid with a 1.5L 4-cylinder Petrol Engine with a Maximum Power of 73 Kw and Maximum Torque of 125 Nm, and an Electric Motor with Maximum Electric Motor of 160 Kw and Maximum Electric Motor Torque of 262 Nm. It has an Ultra-large Battery (18.4 kW) that can do 105 km pure EV range, making daily commuting feel like driving a pure EV. The EX5 EM-i Super Hybrid is available at ₱1,288,000 for the EX5 EM-i Pro and ₱1,468,000 for the EX5 EM-i Max, with the Pro as the entry variant and the Max as the higher-spec trim. Driving the EX5 EM-i Super Hybrid I was able to experience its power especially during acceleration. The vehicle can do rapid acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8 seconds, and a maximum speed of 170 kph, but honestly, we could not do that during the drive because we are more concerned about its fuel efficiency. The EX5 is equipped with Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) for safer driving. The ADAS features include Electronic Parking Break, Auto Vehicle Hold, Automatic Emergency Brake, Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assistance, Emergency Lane Keeping Assistant, Collision Mitigation Support Front, and Traffic Signs Identification. For the Max model, additional features include Intelligent High Beam Control, Collision Mitigation Support Rear, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Brake, Doors Open Warning, Lane Changing Assistant and Blinding Spots Detection. After driving the Geely EX5 EM-I Super Hybrid for 3 days to Ilocos Norte and back, did we hit the 1,000-Km target? Yes and No. The car driven by the Geely Team and supervised by the representatives of the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) got some good results, while our team who drove to enjoy its features got around 900-Km, more than enough to take you to destinations like Elyu, Baguio or Baler and back. The Geely EX5 EM-I Super Hybrid is a perfect drive for any age (yes, even a senior like me), with its intelligent technology, refined comfort, and efficient performance, designed to make every journey feel as rewarding as the destination.
