The 12 bar blues might look like a simple three-chord progression, but jazz musicians often hear and imply much more harmonic movement inside that basic framework.
In this video, I’ll show you how 2-5-1 progressions can be used to create more colour, momentum and direction through a blues, and why practising these movements here is such a useful way to develop the skills you need to navigate jazz standards more confidently.
We’ll start with a basic blues in concert Bb, add some of the most common 2-5 movements, and then work through a simple exercise you can use to start hearing and improvising through those changes yourself.
