The V-22 Osprey takes off like a helicopter, tilts its engines forward and flies away like an airplane at almost twice the speed of the helicopters it replaced. It first flew in March 1989, but it did not enter service until 2007. In between came cancellation attempts, a maintenance-records scandal and crashes that killed dozens of people. Its wing swivels flat for life aboard ship, its two rotors are linked by a shaft through the wing, and a fly-by-wire computer translates every move the pilot makes.
So why did the military refuse to give up on such a complicated machine?
