I trace the final years of the man known as the Yorkshire Ripper, from his transfer to Franklin, the prison called the Monster Mansion, to his death in custody. I explain his background, the failures that allowed the investigation to continue for years, his conviction, and the attacks he survived in prison and Broadmoor Hospital. I also look at why doctors changed their assessment of him and why he was returned to prison after decades in hospital. I then reconstruct what his routine at Franklin may have looked like: single-cell confinement, counts, medication, meals, restricted movement, supervised contact and the constant danger posed by other prisoners. Finally, I examine his death during the coronavirus pandemic and the lasting questions surrounding the case, the police investigation and the families of his victims.
