ENKARUUM — ZALAG DA-RI Zalag… Zalag da-ri… A voice emerges from the distance. Then another. And another — until hundreds of voices become one. ZALAG DA-RI is an original sacred a cappella composition by ENKARUUM, inspired by the language, spirituality and monumental atmosphere of ancient Sumer and Mesopotamia. The title is built from ancient Sumerian vocabulary. ZALAG carries the idea of shining, brightness and radiance, while DA-RI (dari) is associated with that which is enduring or eternal. Together, ZALAG DA-RI evokes the idea of “Eternal Light.” The composition uses Sumerian and Sumerian-inspired ritual phrases to create the atmosphere of an ancient invocation reaching across thousands of years. There are absolutely no musical instruments in this recording. No drums. No strings. No synthesizers. No piano. Only the human voice. A distant female voice begins the invocation before deep male voices and an immense celestial choir gradually rise around it — as though hundreds of voices were answering from beyond the walls of an ancient temple.
