On February 29, 1944, just 1,026 U.S. cavalrymen landed on Los Negros in the Admiralty Islands after intelligence suggested Japanese resistance would be weak. Instead, they found themselves facing more than 4,000 Japanese troops and trapped inside a tiny perimeter around Momote Airfield. Outnumbered, short on ammunition, and fighting through brutal nighttime infiltration attacks, the Americans had to hold long enough for reinforcements to reach them.
