“Die fünfte Jahreszeit” is a sonic exploration of the Alemannic Carnival, or Fasnet. During this season, ordinary time is informally suspended and identity dissolves behind masks (Larve), costume (Häs), music and partying. Local people enact a tradition and ritual repeated year after year, passed from body to body, voice to voice. In doing so, they open new spaces where identity, “truth”, and everyday life can be upturned.
Recorded as a single improvised take using CDJ decks and a mixer, the work functions like a sonic dream where memories and fragments of experience mix, repeat and encounter one another like images in sleep. It reflects on the position of the outsider, exploring the shifting dynamics between witness and participant in this yearly ritual. What does it mean to belong? What does belonging sound like? What exists in these between-places, or “Zwischenräume”, of carnival and localized society?
The source material is comprised of field recordings, vocal gestures, prepared piano and experiments with cuckoo-clock whistles, developed during a residency at Global Forest e.V., Schwarzwald, in February 2026. These recordings document the many Fasnet processions in Triberg, Villingen, Hornberg, Rottweil and St. Georgen. Using digital recorders, cassette tape and smartphone voice notes, the recordings also trace moments beyond the processions themselves over the six days: states of trance, intoxication, cold, the surreal, loneliness and confusion.
Usually associated with club music, the CDJ decks are used here as an instrument for replaying and reshaping sonic memories beyond regular rhythmic patterns. They offer something both limited and specific: a live, physical way of working with time and memory through field recordings. Active listening, memory and decisions made in the moment allow unexpected encounters to emerge between sounds. Overlapping natural rhythms create interference patterns that blur the thresholds of familiarity, trance, noise and belonging.
