Burkina Faso has launched a compulsory week-long military and patriotic orientation programme for journalists, as the government seeks to strengthen national unity and commitment amid the country’s ongoing fight against jihadist groups.
The inaugural cohort, comprising 44 journalists, started the training on Thursday, August 13, at the Pabré Police Academy, located near the capital, Ouagadougou.
During a visit to the training centre, Communication Minister Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo called on journalists to demonstrate patriotism, professional responsibility and dedication to the country.
He said journalists have a unique role to play in a nation defending its sovereignty, stressing that national loyalty should be regarded as a responsibility rather than a personal choice.
Security Minister Mahamadou Sana explained that the programme was established in recognition of the media’s influence as the “fourth estate” and its role in supporting the national transformation agenda under Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
Sana added that the military and patriotism course will be conducted every year for media professionals.
