Video Overview
This lecture explores the stable matching problem and introduces a powerful algorithm to solve it efficiently. We begin by revisiting the concept of blocking pairs and the pitfalls of naive matching strategies.Building on this foundation, the lecture presents the Gale–Shapley algorithm, where one group (men) proposes in order of preference, and the other group (women) accepts proposals greedily, possibly breaking earlier engagements if a better option appears.Through a step-by-step example, we demonstrate how this iterative proposal process leads to a stable and optimal matching. This session is a key part of understanding how theoretical algorithms address real-world pairing problems in areas like college admissions, job placements, and more.
About IIT Madras' online Bachelor of Science programme
IIT Madras offers four-year BS programmes that aim to provide quality education to all, irrespective of age, educational background, or location. The BS programme has multiple levels, which provide flexibility to students to exit at any of these levels. Depending on the courses completed and credits earned, the learner can receive a Foundation Certificate from IITM CODE (Centre for Outreach and Digital Education), Diploma(s) from IIT Madras, or BSc/BS Degrees from IIT Madras.
