How Millions of Crushed Apples Become Luxury Leather Bags | Full Factory Process

The apple is not the raw material. What is left after the juice is squeezed out is the raw material. Juice plants press millions of tons of apples every year, and what comes off the end of the belt is a damp beige cake of skin, fibre and crushed seed. For decades that was animal feed or landfill. Now it becomes handbags that most people cannot tell apart from calfskin. This is the full journey, start to finish, nothing skipped. We follow the fruit out of an orchard at sunrise, through picking, sorting and washing, into an optical grader that flicks out every bruised apple with a puff of air, and onto the belt presses where the juice bursts out in sheets and leaves the pomace behind. Then the hard part. The pomace is dried until it crumbles, milled finer than flour, blended with a binder into a thick caramel paste, and spread across a roll of backing fabric with a steel blade. It cures in a long oven, and then an engraved drum presses a hide grain into it under enormous pressure. From there it is cut by a computer-guided blade, skived, stitched, fitted with brass hardware, and boxed.
