The crossing will open again only at low water, so the family settles in for the night, with one lamp already burning behind the upper window before they even climb the stairs. By lantern light they open a box of someone else's photographs and find a small carved wooden toy — and realize the beds upstairs were already made up for guests who never came. When the water climbs the old stone stair past a painted line left by a flood long before, Nora refuses to leave the box behind, holding it dry on the one step still above the water. No jump scares.
