Jo Mercer works the night shift on a harbor tug. Her husband, Ellis Ward, starts his shift at the cold-storage warehouse just as hers ends. Their jobs are on opposite sides of Pier Nine, leaving them only a few minutes together each morning. They meet on the same weathered bench with two coffees—hers black, his almost unbearably sweet. In those few minutes, they talk about the small things that never feel right in a text: the leaking tap, the package his sister sent, a checkup moved to Friday, the first two leaves on the basil plant, and whether either of them managed to get any sleep. There is no betrayal between them, and neither is thinking of leaving. Their only enemy is the clock. They are tired of building a marriage out of scattered minutes, but they refuse to believe that makes what they have incomplete. For now, they hold on to a modest plan: when the winter contract ends, one of them will ask for a later shift. It is not a grand solution, but it might finally give them more than a few quiet minutes on a bench.
